26/11/09 Reflection

Today we learnt to use some instruments : survey and questionnaire. Quite overwhelm with the instruments. Today understand about the factor analysis where it is a tool where we can validate our instruments if we were to modified our questionnaire. Also learnt a better way of doing the APA, found a website bibilioexpress.com. Hope this help me in doing my APA. (quite lost with this). Hope this will help me in the CI course next year.

Session 3 - group 5 discussion

Group 5: Learner-centred

Does the assigned design of LE exist in Singapore context?????

Learner-centered instructions focuses on
1. building on the pupil's existing knowledge
2. sensitivity to the cultural practices of the pupil
3. respecting the language practices of the pupil

In the local context :
1. The mathematics curriculum is spiral in nature, hence we build on skills/knowledge pupils learn from the previous levels. Tools such as STELLAR, SAIL and SEED ride on pupils' prior knowledge to elicit responses to create new knowledge and encourage discovery learning and students' participation.

2. By infusing NE and using examples with local flavour, we try to make students aware of the culture and practices of other languages. Teachers need to be aware of the pupils' reluctance to ask/answer questions for fear of making mistakes and being laughed at; so teachers create a non-threatening environment. Incorporating cultural practices into lessons to increase awareness. At the same time with the use of local/relevant context, pupils are able to identify and relate to the lessons more effectively.

3. Teachers should learn to "pupil-talk" so as to engage them and avoid dominating the lesson.

Pre-session Reflection

Learnt about bloging. Opened a Gmail account and find that it is a powerful tool that can be linked to other websites/blogs. Created another Facebook for the course. THe pre Session has enlightened me on blogging as I often heard of others blogging but has not experienced it personally. This courses forces me to learn the tools of and thus i hope i will be an enriching one.

Read an article and summarise the article with group 5. It was a fruitful meeting as we are able to summarise the article and give inputs for for the group presentation. Unfortunately we are able to comment on one article only. But overall i enjoyed the meeting and discussion

I learnt there are 4 learning environments perspectives

There are four learning environments namely :

learner centred, Knowledge centred, Assessement Centred and Community centred.

1 & 2) Learner Centered vs Knowledge centered
We are heading more towards learner centered with TLLM and other initiatives. As knowledge giver we teachers cant stray away to far from knowledge centered learning environments. But our role now is more of a facilitator of knowledge rather than spoon feeding the students. This i feel do help students to think more of their learning and take ownership of their own learning. Teachers then would rethink of our role as educators and rethink they way we teach.

3) Assessment Centred
Here i am guilty of preparing students for their exams. Teaching graduating students taking their O and N levels i amn more oriented to prepare them for their national exams. Often than not I prepare questions that make that are similar to the national exams. With pressure to produce results not only from parents but also from school, Changing assessment to other forms would not prepare the students well for exams. But i feel other assesments like projects, feedbacks is a good.

4) Community Centred

This is something new term for me.It talks about other environment like television outings that affect the student learning.

1) Learner Centred - an environment that the learner take upon themselves their learning with a facilitator

2) Knowledge Centred - an environment

Google, blogspot and google doc are all somethimg new to me. It is a new tool that i would want to try with me students in the future to assess and teach online. Though it can be tedious it can be another learning tool.

Reviewing the article on The Design of Learning Enviroment our group reflect on Student-centred Environment. Here i learnt that it focused on 3 instrcutions and we elaborate on it. This environment already exist in schools just that we dont articulate and reflect on our teaching. I could also see that most of us do have all this learning environment just that we do not know all the terms.

Community Enviroment is to connect to the community to the stduent learning. It is anything that is outside the school context, like TV, CIP, learning Journeys.

Knowledge Centred Environment is a shfit of O level and PSLE from simple and direct question to more problem solving and thinking skills.

Assessment Centred Environment has gradually shift from exams oriented to more project work and alternative form of assessments.
